Pronunciation of Magdalene Hall

In the course of the documentary Magdalene Hall is mentioned which is pronounced Magdalene rather than “Maudlin”. There are some grounds for distinguishing Magdalen(e) Hall from Magdalen College (“Maudlin”). The scholarly index to The Entring Book of Roger Morrice (1677–1691) records variant forms for the Hall—“Magdalen (Magdalin, Maudlin) Hall”—which explicitly acknowledges Magdalin as an attested form. In the nineteenth century, John Macbride (then Principal of Magdalen Hall) even attempted to respell the Hall as “Magdalene Hall” to differentiate it from the College, although this change was never formally adopted. In short, while many Oxford alumni feel strongly that “Maudlin” should prevail, the matter is not entirely without dispute.
